Mies Van der Rohe 540 Occasional Table

The tubular chrome steel frame of the 540 occasional table is characteristic of other furniture pieces designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the late 1920 ’s.

Its generous size affords space for a lamp, books, magazines and drinks. The round glass top is securely attached to the base at four points for added stability. It is ideally paired with the Bruno chair, Mies’ Day bed and Le Corbusier sofas for their stylistic similarities. When used with our Modern Classic Bed it is also useful as a bedside table.

The timeless modern simplicity of the table’s design has ensured its wide use for over 70 years as it compliments both modern and classical interiors. Made in Italy.

Mies Van der Rohe opened his own architectural firm in 1912. He left Nazi Germany in 1938 and emigrated to the United States where he taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1948 he was made director of that institute. As in his architectural designs, his furniture designs conformed to his famous maxim "less is more". He is considered one of the most important 20th century chair designers, ie. Barcelona chair and the cantilever chairs.
