Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927, this innovative chair is among some of the earliest designs using a cantilevered seat frame. The sweeping chrome tubular frame supports a thick full-grain leather seat and back. The effect is one of airy lightness and sleek moderninity. Appreciated by collectors throughout the world this chair is a classic of 20th century modern furniture. It compliments all other designs by Mies van der Rohe including his day bed, scissors chair and coffee table. Highly versatile, the 236 B arm chair may be used as a dining chair or occasional chair in either spare minimalist interiors or paired with antiques for a highly sophisticated look. Mies Van der Rohe opened his own architectural firm in 1912. He left Nazi Germany in 1938 and emigrated to the United States where he taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1948 he was made director of that institute. As in his architectural designs, his furniture designs conformed to his famous maxim "less is more". He is considered one of the most important 20th century chair designers, ie. Barcelona chair and the cantilever chairs.
